Carver Childcare
Since the late 1960s, Carver has offered pre-school, daytime childcare for the children of parents who are working or attending school.
Children age 2 through 6 are eligible, and the hours are 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Early in 1997, we opened our P. M. childcare, with hours from 2 p.m. through 1 a.m. One of the first such programs in Evansville, our P. M. childcare enables parents
to work later hours while knowing that their children age 3 through 12 are safely cared for.

Carver childcare is state licensed, and we follow all state requirements. Program activities in the pre-school care are geared to the different age groups. For
instance, activities for the younger children, who have shorter attention spans, are broken up into 15 minute segments. The older children are involved in longer, more complicated
activities. At the appropriate age levels, the children learn about math, science, spelling, music, computers, and culture. Overall, the program helps the children make the
transition from home to pre-school to kindergarten.
The children take field trips to various locations around Evansville, such as the Evansville Museum of Art and Science and Angel Mounds State Historic Site. On some of
the field trips, they visit Downtown stores, which helps them learn how to behave properly in public.
Welfare reform was one of the motivations behind offering P. M. childcare. For those parents who have been or will soon be dropped from the welfare roles, finding and
keeping a job often depends on the availability of safe, dependable childcare. By adding childcare during later hours, Carver is helping parents to take advantage of the good
employment opportunities that exist on second shift.
Carver is eligible to accept the monies state and federal governments are offering to subsidize childcare for low income, working families and for families getting ready to
come off welfare. Under welfare reform laws, childcare is fully subsidized while parents are training for jobs and for up to 12 months after their assistance ends.
